1,869 Families, 1,847 Children Still Displaced as Thailand Holds Cambodian Border Territory

Phnom Penh, November 3, 2026: Nearly 8,000 Cambodian civilians—1,869 families including 1,847 children—remain unable to return home as Thai forces keep up wire, trenches and bunker construction at the Boeung Trakuon Border Checkpoint, the Ministry of National Defence said as ASEAN observers inspected the area.

The Cambodian Liaison Group facilitated the ASEAN Observer Team in Cambodia (AOT-KH) in an observation mission this morning at 8:45 am to monitor, verify and report on the border situation in Kouk Romiet commune, Thma Puok district, Banteay Meanchey province.

According to the ministry, since the ceasefire came into effect on Dec. 27, 2025, Thai military forces have continued installing barbed wire, digging trenches and building new military bunkers, destroying infrastructure, homes and property of Cambodian civilians, creating fear among local people and maintaining their unlawful occupation of Cambodian territory in the area.

Cambodia reiterated its firm stance on protecting the international border as established by the Indochina-Siam Boundary Commission, grounded in the principle of uti possidetis juris, the Franco-Siamese conventions and treaties, maps and the procès-verbaux of the boundary commission, along with prior agreements between the two parties.

The Royal Government and the Ministry of National Defence reaffirmed their commitment to fully implement the Joint Statement of the Third Special Meeting of the Cambodia-Thailand General Border Committee of Dec. 27, 2025, the Joint Declaration on the Peace Agreement of Oct. 26, 2025, and other relevant agreements, aiming to restore normalcy and lasting peace and stability.
