Anutin Sues iLaw Director After Being Named in Senate Vote-Buying Scandal
PHNOM PENH, July 22, 2026 – Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has filed a defamation lawsuit against iLaw Director Yingcheep Atchanont, days after the civil society group submitted explosive evidence implicating him in an alleged Senate election vote-buying scheme.
On July 21, iLaw presented evidence to the opposition linking Anutin and eight other ministers and MPs to the alleged scheme, including witness testimonies and financial records. The following day, Anutin announced he would proceed with legal action against Yingcheep, insisting there would be no settlement.
"I didn't do anything wrong, so why should I be worried?" Anutin said, adding that everyone must be responsible for what they say.
The defamation lawsuit comes as the opposition, led by Mr. Parit Wacharnsinthu, has pledged to thoroughly investigate the allegations, stating: "We will do our utmost to investigate this Senate corruption case thoroughly."
The development has intensified scrutiny of the Senate election process and raised questions about the independence of the Election Commission.
