ASEAN Observer Team Visits Poipet Border Area to Verify Ceasefire Implementation

PHNOM PENH, August 20, 2026 – The ASEAN Observer Team in Cambodia (AOT-KH), led by its Head of Mission from the Philippines, conducted an on-site observation and verification visit at the Poipet International Border Checkpoint on Thursday morning, according to a statement from the Cambodian Ministry of National Defence.
The visit, coordinated by the Cambodian Liaison Group (CLG) at 9:20 AM, took place in Kbal Spean 1 Village, O’ Chrov District, Poipet Municipality, Banteay Meanchey Province, following the implementation of the ceasefire.
The Ministry of National Defence emphasized that the affected locations belong to innocent civilians who were using them for their daily businesses. These civilian areas suffered severe damage and destruction during attacks by Thai military forces using F-16 fighter jets in December 2025, and to date, they remain unable to resume operations.

The ministry noted that the site is located in Phsar Kandal Village, Phsar Kandal District, Poipet Municipality, Banteay Meanchey Province—deep within Cambodia’s sovereign territory, approximately 8.2 kilometers from the Poipet International Checkpoint.
Cambodia reiterated its full support for the ASEAN Observer Team and stressed the importance of strengthening the AOT's role and mandate in conducting on-site visits to verify and ensure the full and effective implementation of the ceasefire, as stipulated in the Joint Statement of the 3rd Special Meeting of the Cambodia–Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) on December 27, 2025, the Joint Declaration on the Peace Agreement between Cambodia and Thailand on October 26, 2025, and other related agreements aimed at promoting transparency, accountability, and mutual trust.
