ASEAN Observers Inspect Illegally Occupied Cambodian Territory by Thai Forces
ASEAN Observer Team Inspects Disputed Border Area in Banteay Meanchey
BANTEAY MEANCHEY – May 26, 2026 – According to a press release from the Ministry of National Defence of the Kingdom of Cambodia, the Cambodian Liaison Group (CLG) facilitated a field mission for the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT) to inspect the Boeung Trakuan area in Thma Puok district, Banteay Meanchey Province, where Thai military forces have illegally deployed barbed wire and shipping containers.
The inspection took place on Tuesday morning, May 26, 2026, at 9:30 AM. The CLG was led by Lieutenant General Phat Vibolsopheak, Deputy Director-General of the General Department of Policy and Foreign Affairs and Director of the International Relations Department. The AOT was led by the Head of Mission under the Philippine Chairmanship of ASEAN.
According to the Ministry, the team observed and verified the situation in Cambodian sovereign territory currently under illegal Thai occupation. The inspection underscores the absolute necessity for the Cambodia-Thailand Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) to commence land demarcation work as soon as possible, in line with Point 3 of the Joint Statement of the 3rd Special Meeting of the Cambodia-Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) dated December 27, 2025.
The Ministry also reported that the illegal deployment of barbed wire and shipping containers continues to prevent numerous Cambodian families from returning to their homes.
The Royal Government and the Ministry of National Defence reaffirmed their firm commitment to fully implement the Joint Statement, the Joint Declaration on the Peace Agreement between Cambodia and Thailand of October 26, 2025, and all other relevant agreements, with the aim of ensuring rapid recovery, restoring normalcy, and achieving long-lasting peace and stability.
