ASEAN Observers Visit Displaced Cambodian Families as Border Tensions Continue
PHNOM PENH, July 14, 2026 – The ASEAN Observer Team in Cambodia (AOT-KH) has visited displaced civilian families in Preah Vihear province, as hundreds remain unable to return to their homes due to the continued occupation of Cambodian territory by Thai military forces.

The visit, coordinated by the Cambodian Liaison Group (CLG) on the morning of July 14, took the team to Wat Peung Angkam safety center, also known as Wat Bak Kam, in Chhean Mok commune, Tbeng Meanchey district, where 295 families are currently sheltering.

According to the Ministry of National Defence, the displaced civilians are still unable to return to their homes due to the illegal occupation of Cambodian territory by Thai military forces, characterized by the installation of barbed wire fences, the placement of shipping containers, and the destruction of their residences.

The ASEAN Observer Team's visit underscores the urgent need for the Cambodia-Thailand Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) to resume border demarcation work as soon as possible, in line with existing agreements, specifically point three of the Joint Statement from the 3rd Special Meeting of the Cambodia-Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) on December 27, 2025.

Cambodia maintains a firm stance on protecting the international border as established by the Indochina-Siam Boundary Commission, respecting international law, the principle of uti possidetis juris, and the Franco-Siamese conventions, treaties, maps, and relevant agreements. Cambodia does not recognize any border alterations resulting from the use of force.
