Australia and Cambodia Strengthen Defence Ties with 30 Years of Naval Cooperation
HNOM PENH, June 26, 2026 – Australia and Cambodia have reaffirmed their long-standing defence partnership, marking 30 years of cooperation at Ream Naval Base, a testament to the enduring friendship and shared commitment to regional stability.

Australian Ambassador Derek Yip and Vice Admiral Tea Sokha, Commander of the Royal Cambodian Navy, toured the base's facilities on June 26, celebrating a collaboration that began in the wake of the UN Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC). Since 1996, the Australian Defence Force has provided continuous support to the Cambodian Navy, including technical training, infrastructure development, and capacity building.

Key achievements of the partnership include the construction of an English language school, training programs delivered by Royal Australian Navy personnel, and support for enhancing Cambodia's military dive capability. These initiatives have contributed significantly to the professional development of the Royal Cambodian Navy.

Both sides expressed their commitment to deepening cooperation in the years ahead, with defence collaboration serving as a cornerstone of the broader bilateral relationship between the two nations.
