Cambodia and Japan Strengthen Education Ties

PHNOM PENH, July 3, 2026 – Cambodia's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Youth and Sport, H.E. Dr. Hangchuon Naron, has led a delegation to Iwaki City, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan, to strengthen educational cooperation and people-to-people ties between the two nations.
On the morning of July 3, H.E. Dr. Hangchuon Naron held a courtesy meeting with Mr. Uchida Hiroyuki, Mayor of Iwaki City, to discuss collaboration in education and skills training. The mayor welcomed the delegation warmly and expressed interest in deepening bilateral relations, noting that Cambodia's young population and Japan's ageing society present complementary opportunities for cooperation.
The Deputy Prime Minister expressed appreciation for the warm reception and the meaningful visit, which focused on studying Japan's early childhood education system, particularly its emphasis on self-discipline, independence, hygiene, and respect from a young age. He described these as valuable lessons for Cambodia's education development.

Dr. Hangchuon Naron also shared updates on Cambodia's education reforms, including new teaching methods, teacher quality improvement, and a focus on literacy, mathematics, and science. He noted that Cambodia's education system is diverse, offering national and international curricula including American, French, and British programmes.
Cambodia continues to send teachers to Japan for study and experience exchange through cooperation with JICA, which has significantly contributed to Cambodia's human resource development.
The delegation is scheduled to meet with the Japanese community to discuss future cooperation directions and further strengthen the friendship between Fukushima and Cambodia.
