Cambodia Briefs Foreign Military Attachés on Border Situation, Highlights Thai Violations
PHNOM PENH, September 4, 2026 – The Ministry of National Defence has briefed 22 foreign military attachés from 18 countries on the latest developments along the Cambodia-Thailand border, addressing both progress in peace efforts and ongoing violations by Thai forces.
The briefing, held on September 3 at the Ministry, was chaired by Secretary of State Lieutenant General Rath Dararoth and attended by members of the Military Attaché Corps Phnom Penh (MACPP).
The Secretary of State provided an overview of the conflict leading to the December 2025 ceasefire and reaffirmed Cambodia's commitment to resolving border issues through peaceful dialogue and legal mechanisms. A representative from the State Secretariat of Border Affairs outlined progress in the placement of temporary boundary markers between pillars 52–59 and 42–47, and urged Thailand to deploy Joint Survey Teams (JSTs) under the Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) framework.
The Cambodian Liaison Group (CLG) also highlighted cooperation with the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT) under the Kuala Lumpur Peace Agreement, expressing gratitude to Malaysia and the Philippines for their active roles.
Despite the ceasefire, Cambodian officials raised concerns over continued Thai military movements, deployment of barbed wire, shipping containers, and construction of permanent structures that alter the ground situation and prevent displaced Cambodian civilians from returning to their homes.
The Ministry reaffirmed its firm commitment to implementing the Joint Statement of the 3rd Special GBC Meeting and all relevant peace agreements to transform the border into a zone of lasting peace, stability, and development.
