Cambodia Courts Japanese Investors in Osaka, Eyes Kansai Region Partnerships
PHNOM PENH, Sept. 17, 2026: Cambodia has taken its investment pitch to Japan's commercial heartland, with its top envoy in Tokyo urging companies in Osaka and the Kansai region to deepen their footprint in the Kingdom.
H.E. Chum Suntory, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Cambodia to Japan, delivered a keynote address at a private seminar titled "Investment Opportunity in Cambodia" in Osaka on Sept. 16, 2026. The event was organised by MIRAKU Capital & Development Co., Ltd. and drew investors, company representatives and Japanese business leaders.
The Ambassador described Cambodia-Japan relations as strong and enduring, and credited Japanese firms operating in the Kingdom with earning high respect and trust through quality, professionalism, technology transfer, skills development and responsible corporate conduct.
He pointed to his meeting with the Osaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OCCI) on Sept. 15, where the two sides discussed expanding economic and business ties between Cambodia and the Osaka-Kansai region. He also cited the Cambodia Investment Forum that OCCI hosted during the June 2026 visit to Osaka by Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol, First Vice-President of the Council for the Development of Cambodia.
Addressing the seminar, Ambassador Chum Suntory set out Cambodia's investment case: an open and business-friendly environment; access to regional and global markets through ASEAN, RCEP and other trade pacts; a young and active labour force; a strategic location with improving connectivity; and the Royal Government's stated commitment to private sector growth.
He invited Japanese companies, including SMEs in Osaka and Kansai, to explore opportunities in manufacturing and industrial technology, food processing and agribusiness, logistics, infrastructure and urban development, clean energy, digital technology, healthcare, tourism and human resource development.
The Ambassador said the Cambodian Embassy in Japan is prepared to act as a bridge for Japanese businesses, connecting interested firms with the Council for the Development of Cambodia, relevant ministries and institutions, the Cambodia Chamber of Commerce and potential local partners.
He closed by briefing participants on Cambodia's efforts to combat technology-enabled fraud, detailing enforcement actions, results achieved and future plans — a topic of growing interest to Japanese investors following a series of regional scam cases.
