Cambodia Highlights Regional Cooperation at 17th ASEAN Health Ministers Meeting
PHNOM PENH, September 10, 2026 – His Excellency Professor Chheang Ra, Minister of Health of the Kingdom of Cambodia, attended the 17th ASEAN Health Ministers Meeting (AHMM) in Kuala Lumpur on September 10, alongside health ministers from all 11 ASEAN Member States, the Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN, and representatives from the World Health Organization's South-East Asia and Western Pacific Regional Offices.
The plenary session was chaired by His Excellency Datuk Seri Dr. Haji Dzulkefly Ahmad, Minister of Health of Malaysia and Chair of the ASEAN Health Sector.
Delivering Cambodia's intervention on the theme "Synergising Health Systems for Resilience, Well-Being and Health Security," Minister Chheang Ra emphasized that the strength of a health system depends not only on its individual components but also on the level of cooperation and joint action. He outlined three key priority areas: first, that health challenges are a shared regional concern requiring cross-sectoral and cross-border cooperation; second, the need to strengthen leadership and collective cooperation, provide clear strategic direction, and enhance analytical capacity; and third, the importance of building sustainability into the architecture of cooperation through governance, stable financing, interoperable technologies, and mutual trust.
The plenary session adopted several important documents, including the Report of the Preparatory Senior Officials Meeting, the Rules of Procedure, the ASEAN Strategic Health Agenda 2026–2030, the Governance and Implementation Mechanism, the Terms of Reference of the ASEAN Health Clusters, and the Joint Statement of the 17th AHMM.
