Cambodia-Japan Trade Up 18.7% as Japanese Investment Confidence Holds
PHNOM PENH, Sept. 18, 2026: Trade between Cambodia and Japan climbed to nearly $2 billion in the first eight months of 2026, continuing a steady expansion of economic ties between the two countries.
According to the General Department of Customs and Excise, bilateral trade rose 18.7 percent year-on-year during the January-August period. Cambodian exports to Japan reached $1.26 billion, up 22.2 percent, while Japanese exports to Cambodia totalled $717 million, up 6.4 percent.
Cambodia's export basket to Japan includes garments, textiles, spare parts, electronics and a range of agricultural products. Japan's shipments to Cambodia consist mainly of machinery, vehicles, electronic equipment and daily consumer goods.

Economists at the Royal Academy of Cambodia attributed the growth in part to Japanese investor confidence in the Cambodian market, pointing to projects such as Aeon Mall and several electronics assembly plants as examples of successful Japanese investment.
The figures build on last year's performance. In 2025, Cambodia-Japan bilateral trade exceeded $2.53 billion, an increase of 17.14 percent. Cambodian exports to Japan were valued at $1.57 billion, up 11.86 percent, while Japan's exports to Cambodia reached $956 million, up 27 percent.
The continued growth reflects the durability of the economic relationship, supported by Japanese manufacturing investment and Cambodia's expanding role in regional supply chains.
