Cambodia Seeks Global Backing for 2029 LDC Transition at UN

PHNOM PENH — Oct. 7, 2026: Cambodia has urged the international community to back the Kingdom's exit from Least Developed Country status in 2029, calling for development financing that is predictable, affordable and long-term.

Ambassador Keo Chhea, Cambodia's Permanent Representative to the UN, made the appeal at the Second Committee's General Debate during the 81st UN General Assembly session in New York on Oct. 5, 2026. The debate was held under the theme "Financing development in a global changing economy to accelerate SDG implementation."

The Ambassador pressed for timely implementation of the Compromiso de Sevilla and encouraged member states to deepen South-South, North-South and triangular cooperation through knowledge-sharing, innovation and technology transfer.

Cambodia's message centred on ensuring that graduation from LDC status does not leave the Kingdom without the support needed to sustain development gains.
