Cambodia Seeks Global Support as M-Series Cluster Munitions Injure 10 Civilians

PHNOM PENH — Sept. 16, 2026: Cambodia has urged the international community and development partners with relevant experience and expertise to step up technical and financial support for clearing M-series cluster munitions newly identified on its territory.

The call was made by the Cambodian delegation at a side event, "From Evidence to Action: Advancing Cluster Munition Remnant Survey through Regional Cooperation," during the 3rd Review Conference of the Convention on Cluster Munitions in Vientiane, Laos, running from Sept. 14 to 18, 2026.

Citing research and technical assessments by the Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC), the delegation said M42, M46 and M85 submunitions had been confirmed as M-series cluster munitions newly found in Cambodia, left over from border clashes with Thailand in July and December 2025.


Officials warned the devices pose a serious threat to life, as they can explode at any time, endangering children and civilians in affected areas.

To date, 10 Cambodian civilians have been injured by unexploded M-series cluster munitions, the delegation said.
