Cambodia Stands Firm for Border Justice as ASEAN Marks Anniversary
PHNOM PENH, August 7, 2026 – As Cambodia joined fellow ASEAN members in celebrating the bloc's 59th anniversary on Friday, Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhonn delivered a firm message to Thailand: the border dispute must be resolved justly, peacefully, and without further delay, as thousands of Cambodian civilians remain displaced from their homes.
Speaking at the ASEAN Flag Hoisting Ceremony at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Deputy Prime Minister used the occasion not only to reaffirm Cambodia's commitment to regional unity but also to highlight the urgent need for Thailand to honour its obligations under the Joint Statement of December 27, 2025.
The ceremony, attended by Commerce Minister Cham Nimul, foreign diplomats, and senior officials, celebrated nearly six decades of ASEAN solidarity. But for Cambodia, the anniversary also served as a reminder that true regional peace cannot be achieved while Cambodian territory remains occupied and families are forced to live in temporary shelters.
Prak Sokhonn reiterated that Cambodia continues to call for the immediate, full, and effective implementation of the Joint Statement, particularly the prompt resumption of survey and demarcation work by the Joint Boundary Commission (JBC), and the return of displaced civilians to their homes—in safety and dignity, without obstruction.
"Only a just, peaceful, and lasting solution can enable our two peoples to live side by side in peace, stability, and shared prosperity," he said, reaffirming Cambodia's unwavering stance that border issues must be resolved through legal and diplomatic channels, not through force or unilateral actions on the ground.
