UNITED NATIONS – May 27, 2026 – Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation H.E. Prak Sokhonn addressed the High-Level Open Debate of the United Nations Security Council, calling for the full, effective, and urgent implementation of ceasefire and peace agreements between Cambodia and Thailand.
Speaking at the debate convened by China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who holds the Security Council presidency, Prak Sokhonn expressed concern over the situation on the ground in occupied areas inside Cambodian territory, despite the ceasefire continuing to hold.
"Borders and sovereignty must never be altered by force or through fait accompli," the Deputy Prime Minister stated. He emphasized that the ceasefire and peace agreements between the two countries, particularly the Joint Statement of December 27, 2025, need to be fully, effectively, and urgently implemented in their entirety.
Prak Sokhonn called for steadfast adherence to international law, existing treaties and agreements, dialogue, good faith, and mutual respect as essential for restoring trust, securing lasting peace, and enabling displaced populations to return home safely and with dignity.
He also urged the international community to continue supporting peaceful efforts for the benefit of both countries and for the continued peace, stability, and prosperity of the wider region.
Reflecting on Cambodia's own experience, the Deputy Prime Minister noted the important role the United Nations played in supporting Cambodia's peace process, national reconciliation, and recovery through UNTAC in the early 1990s. Having endured decades of conflict, Cambodia deeply cherishes peace and firmly believes that disputes must be resolved exclusively through dialogue, diplomacy, mutual respect, and adherence to international law.
