Cambodian Defence Minister Draws Cultural Parallels Between Australian Smoking Ceremony and Khmer Blessing Dance
PHNOM PENH, September 9, 2026 – Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence General Tea Seiha has drawn a cultural parallel between an Australian Indigenous welcoming ceremony and Cambodia's traditional blessing dance, during his official visit to Australia.
In a social media post, General Tea Seiha shared his experience attending a traditional Smoking Ceremony, a welcoming ritual rooted in the traditions of Australia's Indigenous peoples. The ceremony, he noted, is conducted to welcome guests, offer blessings, and ward off misfortune, with the smoke symbolically protecting participants from negative influences while reflecting respect for and connection to the land.
The Cambodian Defence Minister observed that the ceremony reminded him of Cambodia's own traditional blessing dance, which is performed to warmly welcome guests from near and far and to wish them happiness, safety, good fortune, and prosperity.
"Although the traditions and forms of these ceremonies are different, both express shared values of welcoming others with respect, offering blessings, and extending goodwill and friendship," General Tea Seiha wrote.
The visit to Australia marks the first official visit by a Cambodian Defence Minister to the country, with the aim of strengthening bilateral defence cooperation.
