Cambodian Patrol Struck by Explosion Near Thai Border, Four Soldiers Injured

PHNOM PENH, July 6, 2026 – Four Cambodian soldiers were wounded on Sunday when an explosive device detonated during a patrol near the border with Thailand in Oddar Meanchey province, the Ministry of National Defence confirmed.
The incident occurred at approximately 12:35 pm on July 5, while Cambodian forces were patrolling a cashew plantation area in Chouk Kruos village, Kouk Mon commune, Banteay Ampil district . According to the ministry's statement, the patrol encountered Thai forces on the opposite side of a barbed wire fence. Shortly after both patrols passed each other, the device exploded behind the Cambodian personnel, leaving four soldiers with shrapnel wounds. The injured soldiers are currently receiving medical care .
The frontline Command Post and expert teams have launched a comprehensive investigation to determine the cause of the explosion.
The Royal Thai Army has firmly rejected Cambodia's account of the incident. Major General Winthai Suvaree, the Royal Thai Army spokesperson, stated that Thai troops were conducting a routine security patrol on the Thai side of the border and did not discharge any weapons or deploy hand grenades during the encounter . Thai military assessments suggest the blast was likely an accidental detonation of unmapped landmines left behind by Cambodian forces, possibly involving newly deployed troops unfamiliar with the hazardous terrain.
The incident comes amid ongoing tensions along the border, where Thailand has many time encroached border and lodged multiple diplomatic protests over alleged incursions .
The Royal Government and the Ministry of National Defence reaffirmed their commitment to implementing the Joint Statement of the Third Special Meeting of the Cambodia–Thailand General Border Committee of December 27, 2025, and other relevant agreements, with the aim of restoring normalcy and ensuring long-term peace and stability .
