Cambodia's HIV Gains Hold Steady as UNAIDS Calls for Stronger Focus on Young People
PHNOM PENH — Sept. 16, 2026: Cambodia's long-running HIV response continues to deliver results, with new infections trending downward, though UNAIDS Cambodia says more can be done to reach young people.
In a social media message, the agency reported that an average of eight people aged 15 to 24 are newly infected with HIV each week in the country — a reminder, it said, that progress in the HIV response must go hand in hand with ensuring young people can access the information, prevention tools and services they need.
UNAIDS pointed to safe, inclusive and youth-friendly spaces as a practical way to help every young person make informed choices about their health.
Nationwide, the picture remains encouraging. New HIV infections in Cambodia are declining, and the country is widely regarded as a regional success story — one that transformed a fast-growing epidemic in the 1990s into one of Asia's most effective responses, built on strong government commitment, community-led outreach and sustained international partnership.
Still, the agency noted that on average three people are newly infected with HIV every day, showing the epidemic is not over and that continued effort is needed.
It called for wider access to prevention, testing and treatment, alongside ongoing work to reduce stigma, saying these steps can help make every new infection preventable.
