China ready to establish security partnership with Cambodia
PHNOM PENHJune 26, 2026 — Chinese President Xi Jinping announced on Friday that Beijing is prepared to establish a formal security partnership with Cambodia, positioning defense and strategic cooperation at the absolute forefront of their bilateral agenda.

The announcement came during a high-profile meeting in Beijing between President Xi and Samdech Hun Sen, the president of Cambodia’s Senate, who is currently on a three-day official visit to China.

According to authoritative diplomatic dispatches, the new partnership aims to build a fresh layer of resilience against widespread regional shifts. President Xi noted that the global landscape is undergoing "complex and profound changes," reasserting that Beijing views relations with Cambodia as an anchor for neighborhood diplomacy. China's leadership directly pledged to back Cambodia’s sovereign independence and security, advocating for the two nations to rapidly push their existing strategic mutual trust toward a higher threshold.
A cornerstone of the proposed framework involves a unified, aggressive effort to dismantle the multi-billion-dollar network of cross-border telecom and online fraud syndicates operating within the region. Praising recent law enforcement campaigns executed by Cambodia, President Xi explicitly committed Chinese institutional resources to completely eradicate what he described as a "tumor" on regional society and economic stability.

The momentum toward this security partnership follows several months of systemic administrative upgrades. In April, the two countries convened their inaugural "2+2" Strategic Dialogue Mechanism, establishing direct, synchronized communication channels between their respective foreign and defense ministries. This deepening alignment underscores a robust relationship that continues to broaden across military coordination, economic aid, and regional diplomacy.
