China's Embassy in Thailand Issues Alert After Citizens Detained, Lured to Border

PHNOM PENH, Oct. 19, 2026: China's embassy in Thailand has warned Chinese nationals travelling to the Kingdom to stay alert after several cases of missing persons, unlawful detention and victims being lured toward the Thai-Myanmar border.
The embassy's notice, issued on Oct. 16, said criminals have used job offers, business inspections, investment partnerships and project invitations to draw Chinese citizens into Thailand. It also flagged scams aimed at people working in live streaming and performing arts, who are invited abroad for filming and shows.
The embassy advised citizens to verify overseas job offers carefully, question unusually high pay and vague duties, and be wary of requests to report to unknown locations. It urged caution over high-return investment schemes and "guaranteed profit" deals, and called for verification of partners and transactions before committing money.
Travellers were told to plan their trips, use official transport and licensed services, and refuse free pick-ups, sudden vehicle changes or invitations to unfamiliar places. Important documents, phones and bank cards should not be handed to others.
The embassy also advised against travel to the Thai-Myanmar border and other high-risk areas unless necessary, and urged citizens to keep family informed of their itinerary, remain contactable and report suspected disappearances to Thai police with entry records and last known whereabouts.
Emergency contacts include Thailand's 191 and 1669 hotlines, the Tourist Police at 1155 with Chinese-language service, the Chinese MFA's 24-hour consular hotline at +86-10-12308, and embassy and consulate numbers in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Songkhla and Khon Kaen.
