CMAC Director: UNESCO Report Confirms Severe Destruction of Preah Vihear Temple
PHNOM PENH, September 10, 2026 – Heng Ratana, Director of the Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC), has welcomed the release of the UNESCO-ICOMOS assessment report on the destruction and damage inflicted upon Preah Vihear Temple, describing it as a step toward justice for the World Heritage site.
According to the CMAC Director, the centre conducted surveys, information gathering, and assessments of explosive remnants of war at the temple site. The operations found that Thai soldiers dropped aerial bombs and fired at 501 targets on the temple structure, causing damage to more than 560 locations.

Ratana stated that the bombing and attacks involved clear strategic planning, tactics, coordination, and command control, with the intent to destroy Preah Vihear Temple—described as one of the rarest world heritage sites and ancestral legacies of the Khmer people.
He expressed hope that justice will prevail and that those responsible will face punishment under international law.
