Double Earthquakes Strike Venezuela and Japan Within 48 Hours
PHNOM PENH, June 26, 2026 – The planet has been rattled by intense seismic activity this week, with two major earthquakes striking Venezuela and Japan within just 48 hours.

In the most catastrophic event, Venezuela was hit by two back-to-back earthquakes on June 24. According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the first shock measured magnitude 7.2 at 10:04 p.m. GMT, followed less than a minute later by an even more powerful 7.5-magnitude quake approximately 45 kilometers away . The twin tremors caused widespread structural damage, collapsing buildings and triggering landslides across the affected regions. At least 188 people have been confirmed dead, with more than 1,500 injured, though the USGS has warned that the death toll could rise significantly, potentially reaching thousands . Acting President Delcy Rodriguez has declared a state of emergency, and international aid organizations are mobilizing to provide shelter, food, and medical assistance .

Less than 24 hours later, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck off the northeastern coast of Japan on June 25 at approximately 7:30 a.m. local time, about 50 kilometers off Iwate Prefecture at a depth of 50 kilometers . Early warning systems were triggered promptly, allowing coastal communities to prepare. While strong shaking was felt across the Tohoku region and as far as Tokyo, Japanese authorities reported no immediate signs of major damage or casualties . No tsunami warning was issued, and no abnormalities were detected at nuclear facilities .

Both nations lie along the Pacific Ring of Fire, making them among the most seismically active regions on Earth . As rescue efforts continue in Venezuela and damage assessments unfold in Japan, authorities urge residents in high-risk zones to review their emergency plans.
