PHNOM PENH – May 21, 2026 – The European Union is planning to invest approximately $22.3 million in a waste sorting and processing plant in Siem Reap province that will convert waste into electricity, according to the Ministry of Environment.
During a meeting at the Ministry of Environment on May 19, 2026, H.E. Sabo Ozano, Secretary of State at the Ministry, met with EU representatives to review and discuss the investment project for waste management in Siem Reap.
The project will utilize European technology to sort and process approximately 22 to 35 tons of waste per day, generating an estimated 35 to 75 megawatt-hours of electricity daily. The plant is also expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 25,000 tons per year.
H.E. Sabo Ozano expressed support for the investment project and requested that the EU and the investing company share preliminary study documents. He also recommended further discussions with relevant institutions, including the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC), the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME), Electricité du Cambodge (EDC), the Environmental Impact Assessment Department of the Ministry of Environment, and the Siem Reap provincial administration.
