Five Rangers Killed, Five Civilians Injured in Narathiwat Checkpoint Attack
PHNOM PENH, July 23, 2026 – Five paramilitary rangers were killed and five civilians wounded when armed attackers opened fire and threw pipe bombs at a checkpoint in Narathiwat's Ra-ngae district on Wednesday evening, according to a report by The Nation Thailand.
The attack occurred at approximately 6:45 pm on July 22 at the Bukeh Sami municipal checkpoint in Ton Yong Mas municipality, operated by the 4509th Ranger Company under the 45th Ranger Forces Regiment Task Force.
According to initial accounts, six attackers dressed in black arrived in a black four-door Nissan pickup and launched a sustained assault using firearms and pipe bombs. After the attack, they fled along Highway 4055 towards Dusongyo subdistrict.

The five rangers killed at the scene were identified as Sergeant Major First Class Theerayut Somakerd, Ranger Volunteer Sakiriya Jena, Ranger Volunteer Wimon Dabthong, Ranger Volunteer Nattasit Kaewsena, and Ranger Volunteer Salahuding Pi.
The five civilians injured were identified as Habib Hina, Muhammad Ali Abrue, Farhah Abrue, Muhammad Hafit Hina, and Awatif Bueraheng. Habib and Awatif were boys. Emergency teams transported the injured to nearby hospitals.
Security personnel sealed off the checkpoint and surrounding area while police forensic teams collected evidence, including spent cartridge cases and explosive fragments. Checkpoints were established along possible escape routes as military and police launched an operation to identify and apprehend those responsible.
