From Battlefields to Farmlands: Cambodia's Decades-Long Mine Action Journey
PHNOM PENH, September 3, 2026 – For more than three decades, Cambodia has been transforming land once rendered uninhabitable by war into thriving communities, farms, and schools, Senior Minister and First Vice President of the Cambodian Mine Action Authority Dr. Ly Thuch has said.
Speaking at the launch of the National Policy on Mine Action 2026–2035 on September 2, representing Prime Minister Hun Manet, Dr. Ly Thuch recalled the devastating legacy of landmines and unexploded ordnance that followed the conflict.
"Farmers could not cultivate the land. Children could not walk to school. Entire communities were surrounded by danger, and people could only gaze at fertile soil from a distance," he said.
Today, that picture has changed. Thousands of square kilometres of contaminated land have been cleared. Casualty rates have fallen sharply. Cleared land is now feeding families, educating children, and attracting investment.
The new national policy sets a course for the final phase of Cambodia's mine action mission—working toward a future free from the threat of explosive remnants of war.
