Germany Praises Cambodia's Plastic Campaign as Ties Deepen on Climate Action

Phnom Penh, November 3, 2026: Germany's ambassador to Cambodia has praised the Kingdom's plastic waste reduction campaign for growing into a nationwide movement, as both sides pledged closer cooperation on environment, waste management and climate change.

The remarks came during a courtesy call and working discussion on Nov. 2, 2026, between Minister of Environment H.E. Dr. Eang Sophalleth and Ambassador H.E. Silke Röfer at the ministry.

Ambassador Röfer noted that Cambodia's plastic campaign has moved beyond a simple awareness drive to become a shared national effort heading toward everyday habit, and highlighted the ministry's strategies for landfill management and its efforts to draw investment in waste-to-energy.

Dr. Eang Sophalleth raised waste, the climate crisis and El Niño, with the ministry outlining emergency preparedness—securing clean water for communities in protected areas, maintaining water sources for wildlife and preventing forest fires linked to global warming.

The ministry also stressed building awareness among youth and children through schools, encouraging cleanliness, a love of nature and tree planting from an early age.

Both sides said the cooperation is expected to add momentum to Cambodia's carbon neutrality goals and its push for a clean, green and sustainable future.
