PHNOM PENH – June 4, 2026 – Germany has expressed full support for Cambodia's commitment to resolving border disputes with Thailand through peaceful means and in accordance with international law, following a meeting between parliamentary representatives of both countries, according to a Facebook post by the National Assembly of Cambodia.

The discussion took place on June 3 at the National Assembly Palace between H.E. Nim Chantara, Deputy Chairman of Commission V of the National Assembly, and Thomas Rachel, a member of the Committee on Economic Cooperation and Development of the German Bundestag.

Cambodia reaffirmed that it absolutely does not recognize any alteration of border lines resulting from the use of military force, while maintaining its unwavering position on peaceful resolution in line with international law. In response, Germany voiced its full support for this peaceful mechanism and expressed regret over the impact of the border conflict on Cambodian civilians. Germany also emphasized that the United Nations remains an indispensable pillar for maintaining global peace.

Beyond border issues, both sides discussed strengthening bilateral ties. Cambodia proposed exploring the possibility of establishing a Memorandum of Understanding between the two parliaments to enhance cooperation across various sectors for mutual benefit. The proposed MoU would focus on strengthening legislative institutional capacity, facilitating regular parliamentary delegation exchanges for experience sharing on law-making and parliamentary affairs, supporting human resource training, and providing additional scholarships to Cambodia.

Cambodia also encouraged more German investment and requested assistance in promoting Cambodian tourism to the German people.
Cambodia and Germany established diplomatic relations in 1967, and the partnership has continued to grow steadily across all sectors. Germany remains one of Cambodia's largest trading partners within the European Union and a significant provider of development assistance for Cambodia's socio-economic development.
