Germany's Outgoing Ambassador Hails Strong Ties as Cambodia Looks to 60 Years of Diplomatic Relations
PHNOM PENH, July 31, 2026 – Outgoing German Ambassador Stefan Messerer has expressed deep satisfaction with the open and productive dialogue that has characterised Cambodia-Germany relations during his tenure, as Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhonn bid him farewell at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The meeting on July 29 marked the successful conclusion of Ambassador Messerer's diplomatic mission in Cambodia. H.E. Prak Sokhonn congratulated the ambassador on being conferred the Royal Order of Sahametrey, Grand Cross, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to bilateral relations.

Key achievements during his tenure included the historic Official Visit of German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier to Cambodia in 2023, the opening of Germany's Honorary Consulate in Siem Reap, the appointment of Germany's first military attaché accredited to Cambodia, and continued German support in health, culture, education, rural development, mine clearance, and people-to-people exchanges.

Both sides looked forward to celebrating the 60th anniversary of Cambodia-Germany diplomatic relations next year and discussed expanding cooperation in trade, investment, education, agriculture, energy, and tourism. Ambassador Messerer reaffirmed Germany's strong commitment to deepening bilateral ties.

The Deputy Prime Minister also briefed the ambassador on recent developments regarding the Cambodia-Thailand border situation and reaffirmed Cambodia's readiness to extend the same support to the incoming German Ambassador.
