Hanoi Schools Close Classrooms as Typhoon Narra Brings Flooding and Chaos
PHNOM PENH, August 24, 2026 – Dozens of schools across Hanoi have shifted to online learning or delayed opening hours as Typhoon Narra unleashes heavy rain across northern Vietnam, triggering flood warnings and traffic disruptions.
Private schools including Nguyen Tat Thanh, Gifted Secondary, and High School for Pedagogy and Educational Sciences announced late on August 23 that they would move to virtual classes starting the morning of August 24. The National Center for Hydrometeorological Forecasting warned that rainfall could exceed 200 millimeters in some areas.
Other institutions took a more flexible approach. Newton Secondary and High School pushed back the first period by 15 minutes and prepared online alternatives in case conditions worsened. Pascal Secondary School delayed the start of classes until 8:30 AM and arranged breakfast for students, with teachers staying until 6:00 PM to help parents pick up children later than usual.

At Doan Thi Diem Primary and Secondary Schools and the Hoang Mai Star system, parents were given the option to keep their children at home if their neighborhoods were affected by flooding or road closures. Those who did attend school continued to receive care and instruction on-site.
At the university level, the Academy of Finance and Hanoi University of Finance and Banking also switched to online classes.
Most public schools in Hanoi were not affected, as they had not yet started the academic year. However, the private schools, which resumed classes in early August, were forced to adapt quickly.
Typhoon Narra was forecast to strengthen to level 9 winds with gusts up to level 11 near Bach Long Vi on the afternoon of August 24. Rain and floods have already caused landslides and flooding at more than 700 traffic points across the north, including 700 in Lang Son province.
