HANOI – May 20, 2026 – Hanoi has unveiled a century-long master plan that includes building a second international airport designed not just as a transport hub, but as an integrated "airport city" anchored by a free trade zone, logistics center, and high-tech industrial parks, according to a report by VN Express.
Located approximately 40 kilometers south of the city center in the Ung Hoa and Chuyen My area, the proposed airport would handle 30 to 50 million passengers and 1 million metric tons of cargo annually. But the vision extends far beyond aviation.
The surrounding area is planned to become a self-contained economic zone featuring aviation services, a free trade zone, outlet malls, hotels, logistics facilities, and high-tech industries. Planners envision the airport as the anchor for an international cargo transshipment hub connecting air, road, and rail transport, with warehousing, cold-chain logistics, and an agricultural trade center forming the logistics backbone of the entire capital region.
The southern zone will also serve as a tourism gateway, linking the airport to the Tam Chuc-Trang An tourism circuit and UNESCO-listed Trang An.
Railway line 1A will connect the airport to central Hanoi, with construction slated for 2026-2030. The plan also includes upgrading existing Noi Bai International Airport to 50 million passengers annually.
