Heavy Rain, Flash Floods Threaten Upper Thailand as Tropical Storm Soulik Strengthens
PHNOM PENH, September 1, 2026 – Thailand's Meteorological Department has issued a severe weather warning for upper Thailand, with heavy to very heavy rain expected through September 2 across northern, central, upper northeastern, and eastern provinces.
Authorities have cautioned residents in vulnerable areas to prepare for flash floods and runoff, particularly near hills, waterways, and low-lying zones. In the upper Andaman Sea, waves are forecast to reach 2–3 metres and could exceed 3 metres during thunderstorms, with small boats advised to remain ashore.
Tropical Storm Soulik has intensified over the northern South China Sea and is projected to approach Taiwan on September 3–4. Although the storm is not expected to make landfall in Thailand, officials have urged travellers to the region to monitor conditions closely.
