Information Minister Calls for Stronger Protection of Khmer Cultural Heritage
PHNOM PENH — September 22, 2026 — Cambodian Information Minister Pheaktra Neth has called for continued efforts to protect, develop and transmit Khmer culture and civilization, describing Cambodians as inheritors of a cultural legacy built over centuries.
In a Facebook post published Tuesday morning, Neth said Cambodia’s heritage is reflected not only in its temples and ancient monuments but also in its language, literature, religion, performing arts, music, traditions and daily practices.
He cited Angkor, Preah Vihear Temple, Sambor Prei Kuk and other archaeological remains as evidence of the knowledge and achievements of Khmer ancestors.
According to the minister, Khmer civilization also remains visible through living cultural traditions, including the Khmer language and script, the Royal Ballet, Lakhon Khol, Chapei Dang Veng, Kun Lbokator, oral traditions and religious and cultural ceremonies.
Neth said being a custodian of Khmer heritage carries responsibilities beyond taking pride in the past. He urged Cambodians to consider how effectively they are protecting cultural traditions and how younger generations are learning about their history, language, arts and cultural values.
He also highlighted digital technology as an important tool for documenting and communicating Cambodia’s cultural heritage, while questioning whether Cambodia is doing enough to tell its own cultural story in the digital age.
The minister concluded that preserving Khmer culture and civilization is closely tied to protecting Cambodia’s identity and ensuring that its heritage remains accessible to future generations.
