Local Farmers Rejoice as Beef Prices Rise Following Thai Import Suspension
PHNOM PENH – Cambodia's livestock sector is experiencing a long-awaited revival, as fresh beef prices continue to rise steadily following the suspension of cattle imports from Thailand, bringing renewed hope to local farmers.
Mr. Srun Pov, President of the Cambodia Livestock Ranchers Association, told local media that beef prices have been climbing since October 2025, creating a healthier market environment for domestic producers. Fresh beef now retails between 35,000 and 38,000 riel per kilogram, up from an average of 30,000 riel in 2025.

The association president noted that before the import suspension, live cattle prices had plummeted to around 7,000 riel per kilogram, forcing many farmers to abandon their livelihoods. Today, thanks to the suspension combined with rising domestic demand and export opportunities to Vietnam, live cattle prices have nearly doubled to approximately 13,000 riel per kilogram.

"This is a very positive sign for our local livestock sector," Mr. Srun Pov said. Farmers are now earning fair profits, and many are inspired to expand their herds to meet growing local and international demand.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Cambodia's annual meat consumption exceeds 330,000 tonnes, with beef and buffalo meat accounting for approximately 89,000 tonnes. Industry experts believe the current price trend will encourage sustainable growth in domestic production while ensuring a bright future for Cambodia's livestock industry.
