Lost Japanese Teacher Beaten for Refusing to Hand Over Cash to Bangkok Teen Gang
PHNOM PENH, August 14, 2026 – A Japanese tourist who refused to hand over money to a group of young assailants was beaten and robbed near a Bangkok rail station, police said, with seven teenagers later arrested after admitting to similar crimes in the past.
Yuki, 43, a teacher from Japan who had arrived in Thailand to celebrate his birthday with his girlfriend, took a wrong turn on Wednesday evening while trying to find the entrance to the Makkasan Airport Rail Link station. He wandered into a public park behind the station, where seven male youths on motorcycles confronted him.
When he declined to give them money, the group punched him and struck him with stones before fleeing with about 1,400 baht, according to Makkasan Police Station chief Pol Col Urumpon Khundetsamrit. The victim sustained injuries and lost a credit card in the attack. A passing motorcyclist found him and helped him get to a hospital.

Police tracked down all seven suspects on Thursday evening, arresting them at flats near the Din Daeng Police Station. The teenagers, aged 13 to 17, admitted to the robbery and assault. They told police they had not used weapons despite some being found with knives, and said they had already spent the stolen cash.
The group also confessed to robbing others in the past, saying that most people gave in without a fight, but that the Japanese tourist resisted, prompting the attack.
A multidisciplinary team is set to question the juveniles on Friday before charges are formally filed, police said.
