Malaysia Pledges Deeper Defence Cooperation with Cambodia
PHNOM PENH, August 7, 2026 – Malaysian Defence Minister Dato' Seri Mohamed Khaled bin Nordin has pledged to further strengthen and expand defence cooperation with Cambodia, during a courtesy meeting with Prime Minister Hun Manet at the Peace Palace on Friday.
The Malaysian minister expressed high appreciation for the excellent bilateral relations, describing Cambodia as a close and trusted friend. He stated that his visit would contribute significantly to strengthening ties and turning commitments into concrete actions, particularly in the defence sector. He briefed the Prime Minister on the productive outcomes of bilateral talks between the two defence ministries and reaffirmed Malaysia's commitment to continuing to provide training courses to Cambodia. He also explored potential cooperation in peacekeeping operations, non-traditional security issues, maritime security, and capacity development in artificial intelligence (AI) technology for defence.
Prime Minister Hun Manet welcomed the progress of bilateral relations and expressed appreciation for the achievements in cooperation, particularly in defence. He reaffirmed that the Cambodian government will continue to support the strengthening and expansion of cooperation between the two countries' defence ministries.

The Prime Minister also expressed deep gratitude to the Malaysian government for its active role in facilitating the ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand and for its continued leadership and significant participation in the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT) mechanism in Cambodia. He encouraged both defence ministries to further deepen and solidify their cooperation.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Hun Manet also briefed the Malaysian minister on the latest developments in the Cambodia-Thailand border situation, emphasising Cambodia's commitment and stance to continue pursuing a peaceful resolution to the border issues, based on international law and in accordance with existing conventions, treaties, and agreements between the two countries.
