"More Than 20,000 Displaced": Cambodia Highlights Border Crisis at UN Human Rights Council
PHNOM PENH, September 9, 2026 – Cambodia has taken its border crisis to the United Nations, with Ambassador Ke Sovann telling the Human Rights Council that more than 20,000 Cambodians remain displaced and civilian infrastructure continues to be destroyed as a result of the ongoing border conflict with Thailand.
Speaking during the 63rd session in Geneva under Agenda Item 2, the Ambassador expressed grave concern over what he described as Thailand's continued unlawful activities in occupied areas well within Cambodian territory. He cited the installation of barbed wire, shipping containers, military and civilian infrastructure, and the issuance of land titles to Thai citizens before joint-border demarcation has been completed—actions he said constitute attempts to create faits accomplis.

Ambassador Ke Sovann called for full respect for international law, including sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the peaceful settlement of disputes, urging the international community to help end civilian suffering and achieve lasting peace.
