Myanmar Leader Min Aung Hlaing to Visit Thailand in August

Myanmar Leader Min Aung Hlaing to Visit Thailand in August
PHNOM PENH, July 16, 2026 – Myanmar's leader, Min Aung Hlaing, will make an official visit to Thailand in August, according to a report by Agence France-Presse (AFP). The trip will be his first to the neighbouring country since being installed as civilian president in April.

Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow confirmed the visit during a press conference in Bangkok on Wednesday. "We are working on an official programme," he said, without specifying whom the Myanmar leader would meet. "It's best to bring Myanmar back into the fold," he added. "We believe that after five years we need to talk, we need to listen, and they need to explain."

Min Aung Hlaing was installed as civilian president in April following highly restricted elections. He previously led the military coup in 2021 that ousted the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi, triggering a civil war and turning Myanmar into a pariah state.

Thailand has been leading efforts to normalise relations with Myanmar, both bilaterally and within the 11-nation Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The visit follows Thailand's hosting of an informal ASEAN foreign ministers' meeting on July 12, which included Myanmar for the first time since the coup.

Min Aung Hlaing recently visited Laos, India, and China—his first state visit to an ASEAN country since becoming civilian leader.
