Phnom Penh to Host Second Round of Nicaragua Talks in 2028

PHNOM PENH — October 24, 2026: Cambodia will host the next round of political consultations with Nicaragua in 2028, following a first meeting in Managua this month that reviewed a decade of growing bilateral cooperation.

The 18–19 October 2026 consultations were co-chaired by H.E. Meas Kimheng, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, with Nicaraguan Foreign Minister Valdrack Jaentschke and Laureano Ortega Murillo, presidential adviser on investment, trade and international cooperation, according to the ministry.

The ministry said the two sides marked the 32nd anniversary of diplomatic relations, established in 1994, and welcomed concrete results in recent years: a memorandum of understanding establishing a political consultation mechanism on issues of common interest, and a visa exemption agreement for diplomatic and official passport holders signed in Phnom Penh in April 2026.

Discussions covered trade and investment, culture, tourism and parliamentary cooperation, along with coordination at the United Nations and the Forum for East Asia–Latin America Cooperation. Both sides emphasised respect for international law and the peaceful settlement of disputes through diplomatic and legal channels.

On regional matters, the secretary of state updated the Nicaraguan side on the situation along the Cambodia–Thailand border and reaffirmed Cambodia's commitment to a peaceful solution based on respect for sovereignty and the non-use of force.

Separately, H.E. Meas Kimheng met Gustavo Porras Cortés, President of the National Assembly, who said he plans to invite the Cambodia–Nicaragua parliamentary friendship group to visit Nicaragua in the near future.
