PM's Monthly Pledge Delivered to Coconut School Founder as Community Lifeline Continues
PHNOM PENH, September 8, 2026 – Prime Minister Hun Manet has made good on his promise to provide monthly financial and food support to the Coconut School on Kirirom Mountain, with the first installment of 5 million riel and one tonne of rice now delivered to founder Ouk VanDay.
The Prime Minister had pledged the recurring support in August after intervening to halt the demolition of the school, which had been threatened with eviction due to its location on historical military land. The monthly assistance is intended to cover the school’s daily operational needs and ensure its continued ability to serve the local community.
Ouk VanDay, who founded the school on borrowed land within Kirirom National Park, expressed deep gratitude for the Prime Minister’s attention and commitment to the school’s sustainability. He pledged to continue providing education and life skills to more than 150 children from surrounding villages, despite limited personal resources.
The Coconut School has operated with volunteer teachers and relies on donations to offer classes and operate a mobile library across several provinces. The Prime Minister’s monthly support—effective from September 2026—provides a stable foundation for the school’s mission, reinforcing the government’s recognition of its vital role in building human resources for both the local community and Cambodian society as a whole.
