Preah Vihear Authority Begins New Round of Emergency Temple Repairs

PHNOM PENH — October 21, 2026: The National Authority for Preah Vihear has begun a fresh round of emergency structural work at the temple, with conservation officials identifying 29 locations requiring intervention across the complex.

The authority said its Department of Conservation and Archaeology held a ceremony on October 19 to launch the second phase, following an earlier round that covered 23 sites stretching from Gopura 1 to Gopura 5.


In the new phase, the work focuses on Gopura 1 and Gopura 2, which together account for 18 of the 29 locations. The remaining sites include galleries between the gopuras, sections at Gopuras 3, 4 and 5, and the base of the western Naga head at the ancient northern staircase.

According to the authority, the intervention is intended to halt structural deterioration and guard against collapse, preserving the temple's heritage value and keeping the monument secure ahead of longer-term restoration.
