Premium Quality Drives Chinese Demand for Cambodian Rice, Farmers Reap Benefits

PHNOM PENH, June 22, 2026 – Cambodian fragrant rice has earned a reputation for outstanding quality, driving strong demand from China and delivering real benefits to farmers across the Kingdom.
Farmers in Battambang province are among those seeing the rewards. Roeu Chamroeun, 58, grows Phka Romduol and Phka Malis on her 9.5-hectare farm in Banan district. These premium varieties are prized for their natural aroma, soft texture, and award-winning quality. Harvesting over 50 tonnes of paddy rice each year, Chamroeun said Chinese purchases have brought stability and better incomes to her community.
"China creates a strong market for Cambodian rice," she told Xinhua. "It helps farmers have better livelihoods."
Fellow farmer Suom Mom echoed her views, noting that Cambodian rice has earned a strong reputation in China because of its superior quality.

The benefits are also felt in the milling sector. At the Taing Eanghuot Rice Mill in Battambang, supervisor Taing Sokchamroeun said the facility processes 30 tonnes of rice daily and has recently begun exporting to China. The mill operates under strict HACCP hygiene standards, ensuring safety and quality.
Lay Chhun Hour, President of the Cambodia Rice Federation, confirmed that China remains the top destination for Cambodian milled rice. "China is a crucial, high-value market, especially for our premium fragrant varieties," he said. "It drives significant revenue and growth for the sector."
