Thai MP Faces Defamation Suits Over Investigation into Alleged Senate Selection Collusion

Thai MP Faces Defamation Suits Over Investigation into Alleged Senate Selection Collusion
PHNOM PENH, August 20, 2026 – A Thai opposition MP is facing at least three defamation lawsuits after exposing alleged collusion in the controversial 2024 Senate selection process, according to Prachatai.

Parit Wacharasindhu, a member of the People's Party, revealed that the suits were filed against him by Deputy Prime Minister Songsak Thongsri, Minister Attached to the PM's Office Suksomrauy Wantaneeyakul, and Senator Sorachat Wish Suwanprom. Parit said his investigation was based on evidence and reason, and expressed confidence that his intention to serve the public interest would protect him in court.

The lawsuits stem from Parit's public seminars and investigation into the Senate selection, which allegedly involved politicians from the ruling Bhumjaithai Party (BJT). Over one-third of the current Senate is believed to be closely tied to the ruling party, with the case widely seen as the biggest stain on the BJT.

The Senate selection collusion case has drawn sustained public attention as the opposition and iLaw have periodically released evidence exposing the scheme's methods, those allegedly involved, and financial transactions. The public is watching whether the 229 individuals allegedly involved will be prosecuted.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and eight other high-profile figures have also threatened defamation lawsuits against iLaw Director Yingcheep Atchanont, with Suksomrauy already filing a case.

Legal proceedings began during the administration of former PM Paetongtarn Shinawatra. The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) accepted the case as a special money laundering case, and the Election Commission's 26th investigative subcommittee recommended prosecution of 229 individuals, 138 of whom are now incumbent senators.

However, after Anutin became PM in September 2025, several witnesses reversed their testimonies, claiming they had been pressured to give false statements. In December 2025, the DSI decided to pursue prosecutions against only eight individuals from the original 229.

The EC is now reviewing the case based on information from both its 26th and 36th subcommittees, with a decision expected by the end of August. Public concern has grown that the EC may decide not to pursue the case.
