Thai Nationals in Drug Smuggling Spotlight as Second Woman Arrested in Weeks
PHNOM PENH, July 23, 2026 – Two Thai nationals were arrested in Kolkata on Tuesday with banned narcotics, according to a report by the Assam Tribune. The two women had come to the city disguised as tourists but in reality had smuggled the drugs into West Bengal.
The Special Task Force (STF) of Kolkata Police arrested the two women from Bangkok in the Bhowanipore area of south Kolkata. They were found in possession of MDMA, commonly known as Ecstasy in tablet form and Molly in granular form.
Police identified the two Thai women as Supawadi Sukuliyat and Suthuwana Kut. They flew to Kolkata from Bangkok on tourist visas and arrived at the Bhowanipore area from Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport on Tuesday morning. They had planned to stay at a hotel before handing over the drugs to local agents.
Detectives raided the hotel and recovered 20 grams of MDMA from their clothing, valued at over ₹1 lakh in the illegal market.
According to intelligence sources, STF officials had been receiving information that drugs were being smuggled from Bangkok to Kolkata. There is high demand for foreign drugs such as MDMA, LSD, and cocaine among some young people attending rave parties in the city.
Police investigations revealed that drug traffickers in Kolkata had been contacting traffickers in Bangkok and other Thai cities. The two women were supposed to hand over the drugs to Kolkata-based agents.
During interrogation, the women told detectives they had been trained in drug trafficking and concealed the drugs carefully to evade detection at both Bangkok and Kolkata airports. Police are investigating whether they have previously smuggled drugs into other Indian cities.
