Thai Woman Held in Myanmar After American Diplomat Found Dead
Phnom Penh, June 11,2026 – A Thai woman is in police custody in Myanmar following the death of an American diplomat, as authorities investigate the case as a possible homicide.

The victim is an unnamed American diplomat assigned to the U.S. Embassy in Yangon. The body was discovered approximately two weeks ago at the Sakura Residence & Hotel, a long-term rental facility popular with diplomats and international visitors, located about 1.5 kilometres from the American Embassy. Police are treating the death as a possible homicide, and a Thai woman has been detained.

The U.S. State Department confirmed the death of a government employee assigned to the Yangon embassy but released no further details. "Out of respect for the privacy of the family and loved ones, we have no further information to provide at this time," the department said.

The Thai Embassy in Yangon and Thailand's Foreign Ministry have both refused to comment on whether consular support has been provided to the suspect. American officials in Thailand and at the U.S. Embassy in Myanmar have referred all questions to the State Department.

Myanmar authorities have given little information. A duty officer at the local police station refused to comment and hung up on an Associated Press reporter. The hotel manager also declined to speak.
