Thailand Allocates 433 Million Baht for Border Bunkers Amid Stalled Peace Process

Thailand Allocates 433 Million Baht for Border Bunkers Amid Stalled Peace Process
PHNOM PENH, August 20, 2026 – Thailand has approved more than 433 million baht to construct bunkers and upgrade communication systems along its border with Cambodia, a move that comes as bilateral talks remain stalled and displaced Cambodian civilians continue to await their return home.

The emergency funding, approved by the Thai Cabinet on August 18, will be used to build 1,669 shelters, install 143 public-address towers, and upgrade digital radio systems across seven border provinces, according to Thai Deputy Government Spokesperson Lalida Persvivatana.

The decision raises serious questions about Thailand’s commitment to de-escalation. The construction of bunkers and warning systems suggests a long-term military posture rather than a genuine push for peace. It also contradicts the spirit of the December 2025 ceasefire agreement, which called for restraint and the creation of conditions for civilians to return to their homes.

Cambodia has repeatedly urged Thailand to resume border demarcation work under the Joint Boundary Commission and to allow displaced families to return safely to their villages. Despite these calls, Thailand has continued to maintain military positions and restrict access to affected areas.

The new funding follows other recent Thai security measures, including the suspension of a discount gun scheme and increased troop deployments. Cambodian authorities have not yet issued a formal response to the latest development.
