UK Minister Arrives in Cambodia, Promoting Peace, Recovery, and Bilateral Ties
PHNOM PENH, August 25, 2026 – UK Minister for the Indo-Pacific Rosie Winterton has arrived in Cambodia for her first official visit, reaffirming the United Kingdom's commitment to supporting peace, humanitarian recovery, and long-term development in the Kingdom.

During the visit, which includes stops in Siem Reap and Oddar Meanchey province, the Minister will highlight UK-funded programmes that are assisting communities affected by the recent Thailand-Cambodia border conflict. In Oddar Meanchey, she will visit an education initiative for displaced children, underscoring the UK's support for the full implementation of the December 2025 ceasefire.

The Minister will also meet with demining experts from HALO Trust and Apopo, two UK charities working to clear landmines in Cambodia. The UK has been a longstanding partner in mine clearance for over three decades, clearing the equivalent of 22,400 football pitches since 2014. An additional £1.6 million announced in May is helping to clear nearly 1.94 million square metres of contaminated land, supporting Cambodia's goal of becoming mine-impact free by 2030.

In Phnom Penh, Minister Winterton is expected to meet Prime Minister Hun Manet to discuss bilateral relations, trade and investment, development cooperation, and human rights. A Memorandum of Understanding on education is also set to be signed, building on the presence of British universities such as De Montfort University and Teesside University, which offer UK degrees in Cambodia.

"Cambodia sits at the heart of a region that matters for the UK's security and prosperity," Minister Winterton said. "The UK is committed to Cambodia's stability and long-term development, and to working together for a peaceful and prosperous region."
