UNCLOS Conciliators Seek More Time to Choose Chair, Cambodia and Thailand Agree

UNCLOS Conciliators Seek More Time to Choose Chair, Cambodia and Thailand Agree
PHNOM PENH, July 20, 2026 – The four independent Conciliators overseeing the maritime boundary dispute between Cambodia and Thailand have requested additional time to appoint a Chairperson for the Conciliation Commission, with both countries consenting to the extension, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation announced.

The Conciliators, tasked with facilitating a peaceful resolution under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), asked for a brief delay to thoroughly evaluate candidates for the leadership role. Both Cambodia and Thailand have given their approval.

The ministry described the request as reasonable and proportionate, noting that it will not disrupt any established deadlines or procedural requirements under UNCLOS. "The additional time requested by the Conciliators to consider the Chairperson's appointment is modest and entirely appropriate given the significance of the appointment and the proceedings as a whole," the statement read.

The ministry expressed appreciation for the Conciliators' diligence and reaffirmed Cambodia's commitment to resolving the maritime differences with Thailand through peaceful means in accordance with international law.
